Autumn is both a wonderful and stressful time of the year depending on who you ask. For most, it is the season filled with autumnal colours and smells such as pumpkin pie and cinnamon. For others, it means going back to school or work while feeling reluctant to say goodbye to summer.
However you approach autumn, it’s a time of year for many special occasions. Why not celebrate the season in your business’s content marketing strategy? Here are a few ways to help you get started.
1. Consider Colours & Smells
The typical colours for autumn are red, orange, yellow, brown, and gold. If your brand is more green or blue or purple, try designing your content so that its colours won’t clash with the autumnal ones. Brown is very earthy and earth is a big part of the season, so it’s a naturally appealing colour to pair with darker colours as a background or a complementary feature.
As for smells, people respond to smell even if they’re only reading about it online. Roasted turkey, pumpkin pie from the oven, a crisp and cool breeze, and apples plucked from the tree are all good smells that capture the essence of autumn. Use the thought of these smells to your advantage when you are trying to create new seasonal content! This part is related to our next tip.
2. Get into the Spirit of the Season
Celebrate the autumn holidays on your business’s social media. Halloween and Thanksgiving are awesome times of the year to celebrate no matter what kind of business you run. Did you know there are more holidays than that during the fall months? Here are a few examples:
- Labor Day (September)
- Cyber Monday (held after every Black Friday in November)
- International Coffee Day (September)
- World Teachers Day (October)
- Talk Like a Pirate Day (September)
- Remembrance Day/Veterans Day (November)
- End of Daylight Savings Time (November)
- First Day of Fall (Autumn Equinox) (September)
There are many more out there. Feel free to choose one or more holidays and celebrate them if they suit your business’s brand and ideals.
3. Put Your Ideas into Words or a Video
While not everyone looks forward to school every fall, everyone does love things like sweet potatoes, apples, and pumpkin pie spice, so try and help your customers enjoy the season in that way. Host a giveaway or a costume contest on social media with prizes for various categories such as Funniest Costume, Most Creative Costume, etc. Encourage others to share recipes for mulled apple cider or their homemade spin on pumpkin spice lattes. Offer a blog post on how to prevent overindulging at Thanksgiving, or things to do on days when it’s too rainy outside.
The other form of content that is great for this time of the year is videos. You could try creating a video demonstrating how to make recipes based on the season. Or get a recording of an autumnal event or convention your business is a part of to showcase its positive side.
4. Try Getting Creative
Blog posts, e-mail newsletters, videos, and social media posts are all great content marketing ideas for your business. Why not go further though and decorate your office just for the season? Try creating arrows on the sidewalk made of paper autumn leaves directing customers to your physical location. Or maybe add a splash of autumnal colour to your office windows or walls by adding printed out leaves (you can reuse them next year if your customers really like them!). Encourage your staff to dress up for Halloween (be sure you join in the fun, otherwise it won’t work very well) and share photos of the costumes on your social media.
However you decide to honour the season within your content strategy, you should have fun with it! Doing so will show your lighter side and promote your business in a positive way. It will also bring in many benefits for your business such as increased engagement with your customers.
If you need assistance with creating this type of content or don’t know how to form a strategy, consider getting help from a content marketing professional or even a digital marketing agency.
